United States Air Force Band of Liberty
Welcomes National Symphony Trombonist Milt Stevens

Band of Liberty guest lecturer Milt Stevens discussed intonation concepts

On January 10, 2005, the Air Force Band of Liberty enjoyed a visit from Milt Stevens, principal trombonist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC. In addition to being a renowned musician, Dr. Stevens is an authority and consultant on the subject of musical intonation.

Dr. Stevens spent the entire day with the Band of Liberty discussing ensemble tuning problems and solutions. He discussed in detail the various tuning systems that have evolved over the centuries, and showed the band how to properly adjust pitch in a wide variety of harmonic contexts. By having Band of Liberty musicians perform orchestral excerpts and chamber literature, and through the use of electronic tuning devices, Dr. Stevens successfully conveyed his concepts. The members of the band observed immediate tuning improvements and acquired critical knowledge to enhance their individual and ensemble musicianship.

Thank you, Dr. Stevens, for a very stimulating and informative day!
