United States Air Force Band of Liberty Welcomes
Cleveland Institute of Music Professor Dr. David Brown

Guest Lecturer Dr. David Brown used the piano to reinforce his Eurhythmics principles

On January 18 and 19, Air Force Band of Liberty members participated in workshops conducted by professor Dr. David Brown from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Dr. Brown is a master teacher of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a method of applying physical and kinesthetic awareness to musical performance.

Each member of the band was assigned to a 2½ hour session. The workshop exercises were very “hands-on,” requiring much physical movement to music and metronome. The Dalcroze pedagogy stresses that the human body is the first instrument that must be mastered if a musician is to reach his or her top potential. Studying kinesthetic motion via Eurhythmics significantly improves a musician’s inner pulse and tempo. The sessions helped the band members learn many new strategies to develop greater internal rhythm—a skill that reaps big dividends in any ensemble situation.

Thank you, Dr. Brown, for your expert assistance!
